Now the 20 year old Greek grandmaster is back at the 62nd Chess Olympiad in Baku and he seems to have improved in his rating. He scored 5.0/6 in the individual event after an opening with Panikos Stavroulis. ChessBase Player, who has first-hand knowledge of Ioannis Matzopoulos, reports that "This match between the two has a different flavour to previous ones: Stavroulis moved straight into the opening, and Matzopoulos decided to take a passive approach and let the opening develop as it would. Stavroulis had already castled, and opened the black side of the board to give his players a decent middle game. While the games are quick chess, there are a lot of positional battles which are difficult to pin down on the screen."
